Chinese Word Order: Build Your First Sentence

Learn the basic subject–verb–object pattern and see where time words usually go.

October 11, 2026 1 min readGrammar

Start with subject + verb + object

Many simple Chinese statements follow this order: who does the action, the action, and what receives it.

Example

我wǒ喝hē水shuǐ。

I drink water.

Example

妈mā妈ma吃chī苹píng果guǒ。

Mom eats an apple.

Chinese verbs do not change their form to match "I," "you," or "she."

Add a time word

Time expressions often go before the verb, either before or after the subject.

Example

我wǒ今jīn天tiān喝hē茶chá。

I drink tea today.

This is a useful starting pattern, rather than a rule for every Chinese sentence.

Try it

Replace "水" with "茶" in "我喝水。" You have made a new sentence.
